Want to learn how to dj mix? Then this is for you!
A few things you’ll need:
- A laptop (ideally a Macbook Pro)
- A controller to control you DJ software
- Headphones or Earphones (like you use with your phone)
- Some songs! (loads over on the Blog)
The idea is to mix in time from one track to another. To do that you must ‘beatmatch’. This involves making each track the same BPM (speed, tempo).
How to DJ Mix
Using your DJ software you’ll load tracks into each deck. Deck A and Deck B. The aim is to transition from Deck A to Deck B and vice versa mixing through your playlist. To get your tracks in time and beatmatch you’ll either need to manually change the tempo of the track using the controls of your controller and use your ears (oldskool, right!?) or you’ll need to ‘SYNC’ them automatically (nuskool, sweat!). By creating a beatgrid on your tracks (telling the software where the downbeat or kick drum is your tracks BPM will be automatically be calculated and matched to the master track (the track currently playing). This only takes seconds by the way! Once your tracks have their BPM’s calculated you are free to start getting creative!
Set Up Recommendations
The awesome set up i’m currently rocking is a Macbook Pro with 4GB ram running NI’s Traktor Pro 2 using NI’s Traktor Kontrol S2 with Sennheiser HD 25 headphones!
There’s so many cool things you can do from making cue points, loop points, adding in remix decks, looped samples, freeze mode, incorporating FX’s, mixing in key and so much more!
